Honouring Ancestry and Tradition: Exploring Figurine 1, a Contemporary African Painting

April 7, 2023

Figurine 1, an acrylic on canvas painting measuring 60 by 24 inches, is a striking contemporary piece inspired by traditional African sculptures, specifically those of the Igbo tribe in Eastern Nigeria. I drew  inspiration from the abstract nature of African traditional art, which is often not driven by physical representation but rather by inner feelings and symbolic representation.

African traditional art is deeply rooted in spirituality and is a way of communicating with higher beings. It is not just about aesthetics but also serves as a means of honouring ancestors and connecting to one’s cultural heritage. Figurine 1 pays homage to the my ancestors and is a powerful reminder of my African roots.

The Bambara ethnic group in Mali, for example, use the Chiwara mask, which represents the spirit that taught humans the fundamentals of agriculture. This highlights the deep connection between traditional African art and the spiritual beliefs of the people who created them.

Figurine 1 is a contemporary representation of this rich artistic heritage, imbued with a sense of cultural pride and a deep respect for the traditions of the Igbo tribe. It is a testament to the enduring power of African art and its ability to connect people to their cultural roots.

In summary, Figurine 1 is a remarkable contemporary African painting that draws inspiration from traditional African art, which is characterized by its abstract nature and deep spiritual significance. This painting is a powerful homage to my ancestors and a celebration of our cultural heritage.
