When conceptualizing this series, the word Fashionista immediately came to mind. I envisioned a collection that celebrated individuality, confidence, and bold expression. At the same time, I wanted to experiment with dark backgrounds—a departure from my usual bright and light colour palettes. This shift allowed me to explore the dramatic effects of contrast, resulting in captivating and stunning works that bring out the vibrancy of the subjects.
Titled The Fashionista, this series of mixed-media paintings was created using acrylic and markers on 32 by 24-inch canvases. Each piece features a striking portrait adorned with intricate lines, patterns, and motifs inspired by the African designs and craftsmanship I encounter in everyday life. These elements weave a rich narrative, connecting the artwork to the cultural heritage that shapes my creative vision.
The defining feature of these portraits is the bold, complimentary-coloured fashionable spectacles worn by the subjects.
