In the heart of central Edo state, Nigeria, lies a rich cultural heritage that has been a cornerstone of the Esan tribe’s identity for generations. The Igbabonelimhin, a sacred acrobatic masquerade, is a revered tradition that embodies the community’s deep connection with their ancestors and the spiritual realm. My latest two-series painting, “Afro-Acrobato,” is a vibrant tribute to this captivating tradition.

Measuring 60 by 54 inches, this acrylic on canvas masterpiece seeks to capture the essence of the Igbabonelimhin masquerade. The title “Afro-Acrobato” is a testament to the performers’ impressive acrobatic feats, which are woven into the fabric of their spiritual practice. As I delved into the world of the Igbabonelimhin, I became fascinated by the intricate costumes, the synchronized movements, and the profound significance of their performances.
Through “Afro-Acrobato,” I aim to document the beauty and majesty of this ancient tradition. Against a pristine white canvas, I have brought to life the dynamic energy of the masquerade. Every brushstroke, every colour, and every texture is a testament to the richness of Esan culture and the timelessness of their spiritual practices.

As an artist, I am drawn to the ways in which art can serve as a bridge between cultures, traditions, and generations. “Afro-Acrobato” is more than just a painting – it is an invitation to experience the vibrant spirit of the Igbabonelimhin masquerade and to appreciate the profound significance of this ancient tradition.
