Unveiling the Essence of Iyoba in Art

Iyoba in Style is the title of this two series abstract paintings in acrylic on canvas, dimension – 60 by 54 inches. The art is inspired by a pendant mask of Queen Idia. The mask is made out of ivory. It is a portrait of Queen mother (which can be called Iyoba in Benin language) Idia, the mother of Oba Esigie, the king of Benin in the 16th century. The mask is a powerful and symbolic image of a woman who was a major force in the history of the Benin Empire. The mask is a very popular mask which I have grown to admire, it is a notable Benin Art which has been used as part of a logo for institutions, companies, fashion brands and festivals. For example the second world Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture FESTAC 77, which was held in Nigeria in 1977, the official emblem for the festival was the mask.
