Dreaming in Colour: An Artist’s Life in the Pursuit of Beauty

Living and working as an experimental African artist in Benin City, I often find myself surrounded by inspiration. Art, for me, is not something confined to the walls of a studio or the surface of a canvas. It exists everywhere — in the rhythm of everyday life, in the patterns of architecture, in the colours of fabrics, and even in the quiet moments that many people might overlook.

Because of this, I constantly feel a deep hunger to translate what I see and feel into my work. My canvas becomes a place where imagination and observation meet. Every day, I find myself dreaming about beauty — about colours, shapes, and forms that can transform ordinary moments into something visually meaningful.

In many ways, my life as an artist is shaped by this desire to create. I spend much of my time thinking about ideas, experimenting with compositions, and imagining new possibilities for expression. The process is both exciting and deeply personal. Each painting becomes an exploration, a discovery, and sometimes even a quiet conversation with myself.

I believe this constant urge to create is part of my purpose. It feels natural, almost instinctive, like something I was meant to do. Creating art is not simply a career or a hobby for me — it is a calling.

The world we live in can often feel overwhelming. There is noise, pressure, and endless challenges that people face every day. Through my work, I hope to offer something different — a moment of relief, a pause, a breath of beauty. My paintings aim to soften the harshness of the world, even if just for a few seconds.

In this way, I see art much like music. Music has the power to heal, to comfort, and to lift the human spirit. A single song can transform a mood or remind someone that they are not alone. I believe visual art can do the same thing. Colours, patterns, and forms can evoke feelings of calm, joy, curiosity, or reflection.

That belief drives my work forward.

When I paint, I imagine the viewer experiencing a sense of lightness — a feeling that life, despite its struggles, still contains beauty worth noticing. Even the smallest moment of connection between a viewer and a painting can make the act of creating worthwhile.

One thing I know for certain is that I never want to stop creating. The desire to bring beauty into the world feels endless.

Because for me, art is not just something I make.

It is who I am. 🎨
