Painted by the Sun: How My Environment Shapes My Colours

I have always been drawn to raw, fresh colours—applied straight from the cup to the canvas without hesitation. There is something deeply powerful about that purity, something honest and immediate. It carries an intensity that feels alive, almost like the colours are speaking for themselves before being shaped or softened. For me, this approach is not just a technique; it is a reflection of the environment that raised me.

Growing up in Benin City, I was surrounded by a constant display of bold, natural contrasts. The African weather itself feels like a painter—unpredictable, expressive, and unapologetically vibrant. There are days of heavy rainfall when everything becomes lush and saturated, the greens deepening into rich tones that feel almost endless. Then comes the dry season, where the blazing sun casts a golden intensity over everything, sharpening colours and bringing forms to life with striking clarity.

This ever-changing atmosphere shaped the way I see colour. It taught me to appreciate intensity, contrast, and the beauty of unfiltered expression. When I paint, I find myself reaching for that same energy—the rawness of colour untouched, direct, and full of life.

In the streets of Benin City, inspiration is everywhere. The deep red earth tells stories of history and grounding. The urban environment pulses with movement—people, textures, structures—all layered in visual rhythm. Even the everyday elements, like the red and yellow buses moving through the city, become symbols of vibrancy and motion. These are not just sights I pass by; they are experiences that imprint themselves into my artistic language.

This energy fuels every piece I create. It influences how I choose my palette, how I layer my forms, and how I allow colour to take the lead in my compositions. My work becomes more than just an arrangement of shapes and tones—it becomes a reflection of a living, breathing environment.

I strongly believe that an artist and their work cannot be separated from their surroundings. Art, in its truest form, is a mirror of society. It carries the spirit, the rhythm, and the identity of the place it comes from. For me, my art must never fall short of that responsibility. It must carry the boldness, the richness, and the authenticity of the world I know.

Through my use of raw, fresh colours, I am not just painting what I see—I am painting what I have lived.
