The Torso Rhythm is a four-piece mixed media painting series that offers a vibrant and poetic exploration of the female torso. In this body of work, I celebrate the beauty, shape, and posture of the female form through an African lens, drawing inspiration from cultural motifs and traditional aesthetics. Each painting in the series, measuring 48 by 36 inches, is created using a blend of acrylic and marker on canvas, resulting in dynamic compositions that speak both to tradition and contemporary expression.
Unlike conventional portraiture that focuses on facial identity, this collection emphasises the body’s movement and gesture. I intentionally leave out facial features, directing attention instead to the curves, postures, and subtle movements of the torso. These are the core elements that bring emotion and rhythm to the canvas. The aim is to capture the essence of femininity—not in its likeness but in its energy and presence.

Each torso in the series is adorned with imaginary African motifs, symbols, and patterns. These elements are not merely decorative; they are symbolic extensions of the body’s rhythm, telling stories of heritage, grace, and cultural pride. The use of sweet, flowing colours enhances the harmony between the form and its design, creating a visual dance of line and movement.
In my process, I draw deeply from my imagination. The lines, colours, motifs, and even the abstract mask faces that appear in the compositions are expressions of how I perceive the influence of the female form on the world. Women, through their presence, movement, and expression, shape cultures and communities. This series is my artistic way of honouring that influence.
The Torso Rhythm is more than a collection of paintings—it is a celebration of femininity through the lens of African visual language. It’s about recognising the sacredness of the female form, its ability to communicate strength, softness, power, and rhythm—all without saying a word. Through this series, I invite viewers to reflect on the elegance and symbolic depth embedded in every posture and pattern.
