Stories in Circles 1: Weaving Cultural Narratives

July 20, 2023

As an African artist, there is an indescribable joy that surges through me when I embark on the journey of creating something entirely new and unique. It’s an exhilarating experience, a moment where I feel connected to the very essence of life itself, as if I’m weaving threads of beauty that the world can see, touch, and revel in. It’s my small contribution to making this world a more beautiful and meaningful place to inhabit.

In the heart of my artistic endeavours lies a therapeutic power, one that has the ability to touch lives with comfort, joy, inspiration, and excitement. Art, with its gentle strokes and vibrant hues, holds the key to soothing weary minds after days filled with the hustle and bustle of life’s demands.

“Stories in Circles 1” is the title bestowed upon my latest creation, a captivating painting that forms part of a triptych of masterpieces. Executed using markers and acrylics on a sizable canvas measuring 48 by 48 inches, this series is a visual celebration of culture and craftsmanship. The inspiration for this artwork came to me while I encountered a local craft during my recent visit to the northern region of my beloved Nigeria.

The craft that caught my attention was a circular table mat, woven meticulously from plant stalks, and adorned with a mesmerizing tapestry of dyes and patterns. Its beauty captivated me, and the rhythmic interplay of colours, textures, and contrasts formed a dance of artistic expression in my mind. I knew at that moment that I needed to pay homage to this traditional art form through my creative vision.

For me, local crafts are more than just aesthetic delights; they are living embodiments of cultural education and historical significance. Passed down through generations, these artisanal treasures offer a timeless connection to our roots and heritage. As an African artist, I see them as invaluable foundations on which I can build my own artistic expression and infuse my work with the essence of my people’s stories.

“Stories in Circles 1” is more than just a painting; it’s a narrative of our shared history, a dialogue between the past and the present, a tapestry of colours that intertwines tradition and modernity. Through this artwork, I hope to bring a piece of my cultural heritage to the world, sharing the vibrancy and richness of Africa’s artistic soul. May it resonate with the hearts of those who gaze upon it, and may it foster an appreciation for the profound beauty that lies in the stories we weave through art and craft.
